The Sailors Ski Trip is back in 2020, for the 10th consecutive year! Join us for a week of skiing / snowboarding in Heiligenblut am Großglockner in the scenic region of Spittal an der Drau in Carinthia, Austria. You’re welcome to sign up whether you have a sailing background or not! Most participants know each other from the Tall Ships Races but others are welcome too. The video below is an actual footage of the Heiligenblut am Großglockner ski area!
Village at 1300m, highest lift at 2900m, plenty very long descents of more than 800-1000m vertical drop and 3x 1300m vertical drop. Nice freeride possibilities too!
The house is located 350 m above the groomed ski slope to the valley station (no need to drive to the slopes) and we can return with the skis to the house. The farmhouse is accessible in winter and summer by car via a feeder road from the Großglockner Hochalpenstraße.
For those not traveling by car: best liaise with those who do travel by car for a lift from an airport underway: e.g. Munich MUC.
Nearest airport to Heiligenblut is Klagenfurt (KLU) wth direct flights from: Gatwick LGW (Easyjet), Rotterdam RTM (Transavia), Köln-Bonn CGN (Germanwings / Eurowings), Hamburg HAM (Germanwings / Eurowings), and Vienna VIE (Austrian Airlines, plenty connection flights).
Nearest train stations (e.g. after flight to Klagenfurt) are Mallnitz-Obervellach (64km) or Lienz (42km) from which one of us can pick you up by car.
Traveling by car: From the North, via Kufstein, Felbertauern Tunnel (B108) & Lienz B107; alternatively via A10 Tauern tunnel.
The house is already booked and we have room for up to 22 guests!
This year, Chuck really went the extra mile to find us a real gem of a house! The holiday house Untertauern 5 in Heiligenblut, is located at about 1500 m above sea level with a stunning view of the Glockner massif and the Mölltal and the ski slope leading to the Mittelstation-Talstation, in a quiet lonely setting approx. 300m above Heiligenblut – really practical for the self-supply.
The organizers of the Sailors Ski Trip go to great length to find every year the best skiing resorts possible to host their annual ski trip. Not only do they research historical snow falls and general weather conditions, but also the topography, ease of access, accessibility to the slopes, and the accomodations providing the best value for money and fun!
If you're looking for a fun event with participants from many different countries and across a broad age band, you're at the right place. Whether you enjoy skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, sledging, or just walking, cooking, drinking and having fun, the Sailors Ski Trip has you covered.
Getting value for money on winter holiday is high on the list of most skiers and snowboarders. The Sailors Ski Trip provides exactly that, while not sacrificing quality in the process. I've honestly never heard of any other place where £220/€250 can buy you a full week of accommodation & food + drinks.
I went there for the skiing, and in the end had just as much fun with the cooking, chatting, drinking, laughing, dancing, and the board games! Count me in again this year!
