Sailors Ski Trip 2023

Heiligenblut am Großglockner, Austria | 7th-14th January 2023

The Sailors Ski Trip is back in 2023, for the 13th consecutive year! Join us for a week of skiing / snowboarding in Heiligenblut am Großglockner in the scenic region of Spittal an der Drau in Carinthia, Austria. You’re welcome to sign up whether you have a sailing background or not! Most participants know each other from the Tall Ships Races but others are welcome too. The video below is an actual footage of the Heiligenblut am Großglockner ski area!

The Grossglockner/Heiligenblut Ski Area

The sun is out, the air is freezing cold; the powder snow has covered the world in a myriad of glittering ice crystals. If you’re thinking ‘photo opportunity’, you are spot-on.

COVID-19

In view of the current health crisis, the following measures apply:

  • ALL participants must get themselves tested for Sars-cov-2 (Coronavirus / Covid-19) with a PCR test after arrival by plane or just before you leave home by car.
  • Once on location we form our own “family” / bubble of negative-tested people: strictly no use of indoor pubs/ Skihütten / restaurants: the house is ski-in / ski-out right ON the slopes, so it is easy enough to return to the house for lunch/beer/snack. We will arrange our own après-ski at the house.
  • Fewer participants: Maximum 15 people total (the house has 25 beds); flexibility until last moment: Anybody who is ill or tested positive must cancel.
  • The Heiligenblut ski area is very quiet this time of year. Furthermore, all cable car cabins are limited to people from the same group only and distance & face mask rules apply when waiting for any lift.
  • All participants pledge to be ultra-careful (in order to avoid infection) the 2 weeks before 09 January and until we are all together on location. Only responsible souls can make the Corona edition of our ski trip an enjoyable experience.

In view of the current sanitary crisis, it is preferable to travel by car. Local train rides should be OK: one of us can pick you up by car at Lienz or Spittal an der Drau. Traveling by plane is not preferable but if you do you’ll require a Corona test performed upon landing + quarantine until you receive a negative test result.

Location

Village at 1300m, highest lift at 2900m, plenty very long descents of more than 800-1000m vertical drop and 3x 1300m vertical drop. Nice freeride possibilities too!

The house is located 350 m above the groomed ski slope to the valley station (no need to drive to the slopes) and we can return with the skis to the house. The farmhouse is accessible in winter and summer by car via a feeder road from the Großglockner Hochalpenstraße.

Important 2021 update: In view of the current sanitary crisis, it is preferable to travel by car. Local train rides should be OK: one of us can pick you up by car at Lienz or Spittal an der Drau. Traveling by plane is not preferable but if you do you’ll require a Corona test performed upon landing + quarantine until you receive a negative test result.

For those not traveling by car: best liaise with those who do travel by car for a lift from an airport underway: e.g. Munich MUC.

Nearest airport to Heiligenblut is Klagenfurt (KLU) wth direct flights from: Gatwick LGW (Easyjet), Rotterdam RTM (Transavia), Köln-Bonn CGN (Germanwings / Eurowings), Hamburg HAM (Germanwings / Eurowings), and Vienna VIE (Austrian Airlines, plenty connection flights).

The nearest train stations (e.g. after a flight to Klagenfurt) are Mallnitz-Obervellach (64km) or Lienz (42km) from which one of us can pick you up by car.

Traveling by car: From the North, via Kufstein, Felbertauern Tunnel (B108) & Lienz B107; alternatively via A10 Tauern tunnel.
